Identify the whole pattern, not just one illuminated button. The BES500 manual distinguishes alternating cup lights, a descale alert involving cup and steam lights, and flashing milk-setting lights associated with the steam system. The same button may also illuminate during a maintenance operation.

Check the steam-system warning and tank status; do not treat milk-setting lights as a cup-cleaning alert.

Use the stage description in that procedure. Do not start a second maintenance operation over the first.

Safe checks, in order

  1. Film one complete repeat of the pattern with all controls visible. Include whether the machine has just been switched on or a button pressed.
  2. Write the pattern as groups: which lights turn on together, which alternate, and whether the machine pauses.
  3. Match the observed state to the cleaning, descaling or steam section in the manual. Choose only the relevant procedure.
  4. After completing the appropriate operation, verify the normal ready state. If the pattern differs from the reference, send the recording to Breville.

Why counting flashes is not enough

An owner saying that the steam light flashes has omitted the neighboring buttons and the operating phase. Two clips with the same steam light may show entirely different states. Record the panel before resetting anything, and keep the phone away from steam and splash.

A useful caption for support

For example: "BES500, cold startup, no chemical in tank, one-cup and steam light together, then two-cup, repeating." This is an observation template, not a claim that your machine has that pattern. Describe only what your own panel shows.

Stop and obtain help when

Stop for a warning that returns immediately after the correct procedure, no water flow, a steam fault, an electrical smell or leakage. Do not invent a diagnosis from the color alone.
