Check whether water fails at the bare group head or only when the portafilter contains coffee. That distinction separates a supply problem from resistance at the basket or coffee puck. A running pump sound is not proof that water is reaching the brew chamber.

No flow with the portafilter removed

Check tank level and seating. If one normal rinse still produces no water, stop repeated attempts and obtain model-specific support.

Water flows without the portafilter, not with an empty basket

The basket or portafilter outlet may be obstructed. Inspect and clean only after pressure has released and parts have cooled.

Empty basket flows; coffee-filled basket does not

Consider grind and dose. Change one variable for the next shot rather than adjusting the machine internally.

The machine shows a maintenance pattern instead of ready lights

Identify that pattern first. A cleaning or descaling state is not ordinary brewing mode.

Safe checks, in order

  1. Let the machine finish its current operation. Do not unlock a pressurized portafilter.
  2. With the unit off and cool, fill and fully seat the tank, empty the drip tray and check for any external leakage.
  3. If safe, perform one normal group-head rinse without the portafilter, using the manual and a suitable container. Stop if no water appears or the sound becomes abnormal.
  4. Compare a clean empty basket only after a successful rinse. If that passes, return to a sensible coffee dose and adjust grind gradually.

What this comparison can establish

Flow without the basket makes a total loss of water supply less likely at that moment. It does not measure pressure under brewing load and cannot certify that every internal component is healthy. Conversely, a blocked basket should not be used as evidence that the pump is broken.

What changed immediately before the fault?

A newly fitted tank, recently cleaned basket, finer grind setting or different coffee dose gives you a useful starting point. A long gradual decline in flow suggests reviewing maintenance history, but only after basic supply checks. Do not pour descaler into a machine that cannot move water and repeatedly force cycles.

Stop and obtain help when

Stop for a loud dry-running sound, no flow after the tank check, leakage, persistent warning lights or a portafilter that remains pressurized. Contact Breville before further tests.

Questions this diagnosis does not skip

Does a wet puck prove water flow is normal?

No. Some water can reach the coffee even when useful flow is restricted.

Should I reset the machine first?

Record the lights and isolate the flow path first. A reset changes settings, not a physical blockage.
